What Helena Bonham Carter Did Right at The Golden Globes

It seems that with the 2011 Golden Globes in the fashion history books, and all the best-dressed lists already hitting newsstands, that the only stylish stone left unturned is the multi-colored, tulle-clad one in the form of “The King’s Speech” star Helena Bonham Carter. She’s the fashionably bold Brit that style critics love to hate in the aftermath of movie premieres and awards shows. And with her costar, Colin Firth, taking home the “Best Actor” nod for his portrayal of King George VI, Ms. Carter is enjoying a brighter spotlight than ever – and so are her questionable outfits. But because the 44-year-old star is getting hit so hard in other media outlets, we thought it might be interesting to point out a few things she actually nailed on Globes night.

For starters, Helena’s colorful, multi-layer gown is by no one other than Vivienne Westwood, a living fashion legend. Every designer from the late, great Alexander McQueen to Project Runway winner (and heavily-lauded, relative newcomer) Christian Siriano has cited Westwood as an icon and an inspiration. If a younger, hipper Hollywood starlet on the rise chose this gown for the Globes, we think there’s a chance that critics might applaud her for taking a bold risk – and nailing the look. Sure, Helena’s gown certainly isn’t for the faint of fashion heart, but with the right accessories and hairstyle, the beautifully crafted creation might actually shine.

Aside from choosing risky Westwood, we also need to note Helena’s tomato-red manicure. In an ocean of pale pinks, we love this look – and think her brightly lacquered tips actually stand up well against such a bold dress. The star’s choice to pair mismatched (red and green!) satin heels with her look is another odd one, but remember when Carrie Bradshaw wore a similar Manolo look in mismatched pink and blue? It’s not that different after all – and we’re proud of Helena for never conforming to fashion norms. Besides, wouldn’t a simple black gown be infinitely boring on such an eccentric star? What do you think about this look?
