Anne Hathaway on Marni Overload

We adore Anne Hathaway’s sweet girl-next-door personality, her daring roles in challenging films, and most of the time, her fashion sense. In our eyes, this is one young Hollywood starlet who can practically do no wrong. Which is why were a bit shocked to see the normally polished brunette beauty step out in a confusing conglomerate of prints and textures at the January 28 “Sneak Beak” screening of her new animated film, “Rio.”

In Anne’s first foray into voice-over animation, she lends her famous pipes to a stubbornly independent bird named Jewel, who gets whisked off to Rio de Janeiro by a McCaw from Minnesota, voiced by The Social Network’s Jesse Eisenberg. The film’s plot sounds endearing and precious, and with preliminary reviews already declaring this children’s flick a “must-see,” we can’t wait to order our tickets. But we’re not feeling so excited about Anne’s ensemble for the blue carpet screening event.

In a top and printed pants by Marni and Casadei platform wedges, it almost looks like Anne is trying to wear two separate outfits at once. Like we said, we usually love her style – so we’re willing to give her a free pass here – but what do you think about this look?

Each individual piece is actually edgy and stylish. We adore these polka dot Marni cropped pants – and think they would look great with a long black blazer. Anne’s striped Marni top would look great on her slender figure, had she paired it with slim-fitting leggings. We especially love Anne’s bold wedged here, since platforms and natural materials are huge for Spring 2011. We just don’t love everything together.

Had Anne worn each piece in a different way, we would have loved her look. In fact, we hope she will go back to the fashion drawing board and restyle her Marni pieces before permanently retiring them. In the meantime, we’re hoping those fierce and fabulous Casadei wedges make a few more appearances at “Rio” blue carpet premieres across the globe throughout the upcoming spring and summer!
