In the movie business, a scandal that happens can pretty much boost any crappy movie into the coveted box office status. Little did we know it can also happen in fashion. Take Katie Holmes’ clothing line, Holmes & Yang, which she created in 2009 with celebrity stylist Jeanne Yang. The line received lukewarm attention as it was only affordable to the A-Listers.
However, when Holmes divorced her husband, Tom Cruise, sales of Holmes & Yang went up. Beverly Hills Barney’s reported that Holmes’ line has been selling well, following the divorce news. Same thing happened in New York, and although they don’t carry the line in Dallas, people are asking about the clothing line.
This must have something to do with the brand’s announcement that they were going to show their collection for the first time in New York’s Fashion Week this coming September. David Zyla, stylist and author of “The Color of Style,” said:
Every editor will be at the Spring 2013 Holmes & Lang showing this September at New York’s Fashion Week. Katie’s divorce and the masterful manner in which she handled it, is shining a light onto anything that she does at this moment. This is a dream publicity opportunity for the label. The buyers will actually place their orders after the September show for delivery in February, so we will (have a better idea of its success) in the fall season.
He also predicts that the line will hit the right spot with customers:
Provided that the collection is on-trend as well as purchased and merchandised well by the store buyers, I predict a tremendous amount of interest in the collection at the retail level when it hits stores next February. The retail customer will pay the collection special notice, not only due to the styling but as art created by a role model who they respect for handling what would have been such a messy situation with such ease and poise.
Following her divorce, Katie Holmes has been a paparazzi target, and she didn’t waste this photo op. Holmes has been wearing her own collection numerous times.
Good for her!
