Teyana Taylor designed a shoe for Adidas Originals called the “Harlem GLC” (Harlem Good Luck Charm). The shoes combine smooth and textured bronze leather with black rubber accents.
An Adidas Originals shoe designer explained that the shoe was inspired by armor:
When thinking about Teyana Taylor, I just start trying to get the feel of her. And to me she was more of an artist. When you look at the shoes you’ll see the scales and more of that shiny metallic. You’ll see some of the pyramid studs up here. And really that’s inspired by medieval armor. This back piece is more inspired by a ribcage. It’s like a piece of armor, it guards the heart. Even though it’s an all-armored shoe it really does house the person that she is. She’s ready to go out and conquer the world.
The sneakers were released on February 16, 2013 and priced at $140 a pair. They became the fattest-selling Adidas shoes of all-time and are rumored to have sold out in a mere 15 minutes.
Teyana was scheduled to release a second colorway as a result of the huge success. She designed a mostly-black version which was dubbed the “Harlem GLC Dark Knight.” It was tentatively set to be released on Black Friday November 29, 2013, but the scheduled date passed with no sign of a shoe.
In December 2013, Adidas confirmed that they would no longer be working with Teyana Taylor. The announcement was made after a nasty twitter fight between Taylor and Rihanna, which is believed to be the reason for the severed ties.
“All I can say is that Adidas partners with athletes and artists who blend well with our brand values. We evaluate our relationships with partners based on the values we hold at Adidas and we don’t condone violence of any kind,” an Adidas senior PR manager told madamenoire.
